If you just want to confirm that you’re the registered person for a vehicle, you can check this on a different page. You’ll need your plate number and your name or driver licence number.
Check if you’re the registered person
If you want to request the name and address of a registered person, you'll need the vehicle details and your ID. It can take up to 5 working days for us to process your request.
You’ll need the vehicle’s:
- plate number
- make, and
- model
Your ID can be:
- New Zealand driver licence, or
- NZTA customer number, or
- other form of identification which shows name and date of birth details.
Privacy laws
The personal information we hold on the Motor Vehicle Register is protected by privacy laws. You must have a very good reason for asking for it.
The law only permits the release of personal information for:
- enforcement of the law
- maintenance of the security of New Zealand
- collection of charges imposed or authorised by an enactment
- the administration and development of transport law and policy, and
- where the public interest outweighs the privacy of the individual concerned.
Each application is different and will be considered on a case-by-case basis. For your application to be accepted you’ll need to provide exceptional evidence showing a good reason for needing the information. It must fit the legislated criteria above.
